I ain’t no doctor
a weekly column by charles faris, hhc
Oh most humble and sometimes pressed for time non-doc;
I know you are spending the week studying with your main yogi John Friend, so I thought I would ask you a simple question: how the heck am I supposed to get enough greens into my diet? I was not born with the jaws of a ruminant!
Loves the cows but ain’t one
Dear non-bovine cow lover,
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share my absolute favorite way to get a large dose of raw greens with minimal chewing or preparatory effort. And thanks for reminding me that I have things to do this week!
An easy way to get your greens
Arguably the most likely suspect in the “most important thing missing from your diet” sweepstakes, dark leafy greens are also one of the most challenging things to add, which is probably the reason for their near-invisible status.
Rather than go through all the reasons you aren’t getting enough of these bad boys (that’s coming…) I’ll just keep it simple and give you my favorite most versatile recipe for the greens. This one can be extremely low cal and cleansing, or loaded down with all sorts of goodies to get a nice high quality fat/protein balance.
The basic recipe
1 apple, chopped in 4, everything but the stem
3 to 4 big leaves of kale
12 oz water
a shake of cinnamon
a pinch of salt
a spoonful of coconut or hemp oil
Blend the heck out of it!
Run around the room like a maniac while the blender is doing its thing (this is called doing the blender dance).
That’s it!
Unless of course you want to play around with it, in which case you could add:
a cup of wild blueberries
an egg or two
some plain full fat (need i say?) yogurt
I like to blend all the vegan stuff together before adding the eggs and yogurt, which don’t need or like too much blending power.
Don’t forget to dance!

Hey Chas!
Don’t forget liquids should be chewed too. Can’t wait to try this Green Warrior Smoothie. Keep it up…

@stacey it’s pretty tough to get this one down without a little bit of chewing…let me know how you like it!
