passion play 1: home cooking!

put up or shut up!

yesterday i asked you about your passion…what’s that thing that you will do regardless of how much time, money or freedom you have or don’t have. well of course i’ve been challenged to put some more words where my words are…or something like that…and so i’ll be taking some time all week to look at some of my passions. todays view: home cooking.

time, money, joie de vivre

three great things about cooking my own food:

  1. when you add in driving, waiting in line, waiting to get your food, and then more driving, the economy of time definitely tilts in the direction of home cooking, especially when you factor in cooking enough for dinner and then lunch, or preparing enough vegetables, beans, grains, or whatever to have enough for a completely different meal in another day or two.
  2. no restaurant can stay in business if they let their overall food cost get much higher than 25-30%. so what you are basically paying for when you buy prepared foods is time and convenience. we already showed that the time myth is false, so then it all becomes convenience. i like to look at it this way…what else would i like to buy with that 70-75%? and if you are still not swayed, there is always:
  3. pure joy! it’s fun to cook, once you get the hang of it. you don’t have to ask anyone to leave out the green peppers, and you can use as much garlic as you’d like. put a spice wheel in the middle of the table and everyone can season to suit themselves…and did i mention that it is fun? developing an intimate relationship with your food preparation is just another way to add that much more intimacy and passion into your life.

not even lived!

socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living i’d like to add that the un-passionate life is not even lived!

favorite things to cook

i tend to simple.

  • sauteed kale with onions and garlic (drink the pot likker!)
  • red dal (lentils) with salt and pepper or with indian spices, with vegetables of plain
  • bacon and eggs!
  • old fashioned oats with chopped apple and yogurt
  • simple baked white fish with lemon, served with sauteed kale and quinoa
  • split pea soup
  • sweet potato chili
  • butternut squash ratatouille

i could go on, of course, and i’d rather hear from you…and of course recipe requests are always honored!
