nobody knows my troubles but God

someone to talk to

i’m in the middle of some stuff, the kind of stuff that generally calls for some verbal restraint, for some cards close to the chest. you could say i’ve got some troubles. beyond that i ain’t talkin’.

and it got me thinking (like…what doesn’t?):

what is that thing that has been lifted up on the altar of 21st century pop psych cliche, that auto response when somebody says they got troubles?

“you need to talk to somebody”

or it’s near cousin “i need to talk to somebody”.

both of which can work out i suppose if you end up talking to the right person, a person who ultimately steers you in the right direction, away from some sort of attempt to get help from someone who cannot possibly know what you are going through or what can help to ease your pain, a person who can steer you in the direction of your own heart.

Universe in your heart

there are some good reasons to hold your cards close to your chest when you are going through deep trouble.

  • talking about your troubles will only reinforce them in your mental, emotional, energetic, physical reality
  • most of the people you talk to won’t really listen to what you are saying because it will trigger up thoughts about their own troubles
  • most of the people you talk to will give you some sort of advice (based on their own troubles)
  • most of that advice will be bad
  • most of that advice will keep you from consulting your own heart

which is why you should hold the cards close to your chest in the first place: it’s close to your heart. and there is a gateway to Universe in your heart. a gateway to God. Allah, Brahma, Ram, or whatever the heck you want to call Universe, the one verse, which, as buckminster fuller points out, being singular and inclusive of everything, doesn’t require a “the”.

which is why quite often you are better off if nobody knows your troubles but god. then you get what you need straight from source, tailor made for you.

somethings going on and you don’t know what it is

so if you are like me all this talk of God is starting to give you the creeps, or something like that. i blame it on my upbringing, which left me with a very fractured spirituality, which i have spent the years since piecing together, a little sunday school here, a little hare krishna there, a healthy dose of plant kingdom inspiration to pull me back from the depths of cynical atheism, and an ever developing practice of yoga, sufi remembrance, and tibetan heart meditation techniques to keep it alive on a daily basis.

and yet, when we turn to people instead of Source, we are bound to wind up in one confusing place after another, strangers in a strange land, lost and suffering, when a simple shift of perspective could find us filled to the brim with everything we need. which isn’t the same as taking away our troubles! and which does ease our reaction to them, our attachment to them. and which changes our view of them.

looking into the challenges many of us face when dealing with notions of God, Divinity, etc., i have discovered that it is possible to gain insight and fulfillment directly from source, even if you think that is just a superstitious story made up be people who are too weak to bear just how horrible and wonderful the world is without leaning on the crutch of God.

how to talk to God when you don’t believe in God

i had a conversation recently with an atheist who couldn’t feel anything in his heart. we were taking mark silver’s heart of money course, and it just wasn’t working for him. he said something about trying to engage the story of feeling god in his heart so that he could do the work of the course, and how he just couldn’t drop his rational mind long enough to make that happen.

now, here’s the thing. there is no need to engage a story that doesn’t work for you. just make up a different story. that’s the power of myth. make up a story you can believe in and then run with it. if you are a christian talk to jesus with your heart. if you are a rationalist talk to your brain with your heart. it’s all the same either way. it’s results we are looking for either way, isn’t it?

super simple way to get your heart filled up

so here is the super simple way to tell your troubles to the exact right person who can hear your, fill you, and let you know what to do next. pick a suitably rational or spiritual story to frame up the practice and then prepare yourself for a wonderful experience.

  • sit up in a comfortable position
  • close your eyes and tune into your breath
  • feel what you are feeling; arms, legs, heart, head, whatever
  • place your attention in your heart and feel your breath, the steady rise and fall of your chest
  • maintaining this heart awareness, place your attention on the space behind your brow. you can call this your third eye if you are mystically bent, or your forebrain if you are more rational. or you can just feel it.
  • as you inhale, feel the breath move from the brow to the heart
  • as you exhale, feel the breath move from the heart to the brow

that’s the whole technique. once you get into a good feeling zone, allow yourself to feel your troubles deeply. and allow your feelings to shift. and once you are feeling calm and peaceful, allow your thoughts to offer you some guidance.

it takes practice

like anything, it takes some practice to get good with this. and it’s easy.

good luck and let me know how it goes for you.
