democracy is really coming!

by chas on November 5, 2008

democracy requires direct action by the population.

if we just sit back and let obama do it then we’ll end up just where we always end up. 8 years of democrat in white house building up a nice budget surplus, fat of the land, etc. And then the chickens will come to roost, the foxes will weasel their way in charge of the hen house once more, and the whole damn thing starts all over again.

we win democracy the same way we won this election:

  • we get involved. weekly if not daily.
  • we talk to people. daily if not hourly.
  • we remember that this land is our land, hourly if not by the minute.

democracy is created not consumed.

all of life is a flux, a work in progress. the only constant is change (and my occasional penchant for macro loading the cliches). we re-create (or recreate!) our country daily. every morning we wake up free people or not. the roman republic was hijacked into dictatorship. the american government was hijacked and appears to have landed safely. details of the legal status of the hijackers is unknown.

democracy is not for sale! we have to create it every single day of the year, every single hour of the day, every single minute of the hour!

  • in our homes,
  • in our workplaces,
  • in our social centers,
  • in our hearts.

this is merely a reclamation of democracy in this country.

the hard work starts now. we have to stay awake! how asleep we had to be to squander the good will of the world after 9/11 by diving down the path of fear, hate, and war.

we sat by helplessly while the ship of state changed course directly in the direction of the very great white whale that could insure it’s destruction! and we were awakened by a man who told us that we could change the course of our country. who reminded us that yes, we can live in a world of peace and cooperation.

i received a very special email from barack obama today. he wrote:

all of this happened because of you

what i hear in that message, in between the lines, lurking in the shadows, the monster that scares every

  • republican,
  • democrat,
  • lobbyist,
  • defense contractor,
  • member of the military industrial complex,
  • profiter from business as usual

what i hear in that message is that nothing more, no real change will happen without me.
and you.
all of you.

the proof is in the pudding!

so we got the proof that we can. now is the time to prove that we will. and the proof of that will reveal itself in our daily lives, and in the lives of our friends, our family, our neighbors, the people who voted for the wrong guy.

creation never stops. to paraphrase mohandas  gandhi, it is time for us to be the change we want to see in the world.

my world.
your world.
our world.

what is the change that you want to see? express yourself! it’s your democratic duty!
