true wheel tuesday! week 3: green power

by chas on April 21, 2009

so now what?
so you’ve assessed the trueness of your wheel, and you’ve discovered your strengths and your weaknesses, the areas where you are covered and the areas where you are bare, bald, ready to pop, flat! and you’ve set yourself some goals, spread out over time. and maybe you’ve even compared your goals to your [...]

by chas on April 8, 2009

a cautionary tale
wandered into trader joes the other day to buy a simple lunch, an apple and some cheese, and when i got my receipt i noticed that i was charged 65¢ rather than the expected 45¢. so i mentioned it to the cashier and her response was
the organic apples are always 65¢.
the [...]

why don’t we do what we say we want to do?
the way i see it is that we are either deluded about what we say we want to do, ie we don’t really want to do it, it’s just an idea, something we haven’t really gotten into or even thought through, and what we [...]

why i’m an early riser

by chas on March 26, 2009

the calm before the storm
it’s 4:58 in the morning, and section 2/1 of brian eno’s music for airports has just woken me. this is heaven. gentle minimal piano and angelic female voices, barely audible and yet for me a siren call: my morning pages await.
next to me, the woman is sound asleep. it would take [...]

global coherence

by chas on November 25, 2008

two places at the same time
impossible according to newtonian physics, right. well, good thing we aren’t living in the 17th century, eh? because today i am going to teach you a simple technique for building coherence between both hemispheres of your brain, between your brain and your heart, and between yourself and the planet you [...]

the real thing

by chas on November 20, 2008

seek and you shall find?
so you’re looking for the real thing, he said.
yeah. i’m tired of playing around.
you’ll never find it.
she looked at him, half disappointed and half intrigued. why do you say that?
he smiled. it’s not findable.
not findable?
it has a lifetime of a moment. and it doesn’t exist until you make it.
yeah?
yeah. he arched [...]

nobody knows my troubles but God

by chas on November 19, 2008

someone to talk to
i’m in the middle of some stuff, the kind of stuff that generally calls for some verbal restraint, for some cards close to the chest. you could say i’ve got some troubles. beyond that i ain’t talkin’.
and it got me thinking (like…what doesn’t?):
what is that thing that has been lifted up on [...]

i’m only sleeping 2

by chas on November 17, 2008

I ain’t no doctor
a weekly column by charles faris, hhc
Last week I began talking about sleep, how much is enough and how to get enough. I definitely came out in favor of quality over quantity, and offered up a list of important factors in getting the most out of your time asleep, going over the [...]

by chas on November 12, 2008

or something like that
back in the day, working at a record store while walking one foot in front of the other down the cul de sac of a degree in english, which would qualify me for more years working at record stores, i had occasion to read the adventures of fat freddy’s cat, one of [...]
